Wood Recycler Helps Get Sea Cadets Afloat Again
A wood recycling company has donated £1,000 to the Redcar Sea Cadets following a break in at their headquarters.
Thieves stole two motors, including one for the group’s safety boat, and other equipment when they broke a storage facility in Redcar last month.
Redcar-based UK Wood Recycling heard about the break-in and contacted the group offering a £1,000 donation towards getting their equipment replaced. The cadets have decided to use the money to purchase a second-hand mini bus so they can transport the cadets to events around the region.
Vicki Hughes, Group Business Development Director for UK Wood Recycling, said: “We were really sorry to hear about the break in at Redcar Sea Cadets, especially as all their work is done by volunteers and every bit of money they raise goes towards enabling the group to operate.
“We regularly support local causes and so it seemed more than appropriate to give the sea cadets a bit of a helping hand to get back on their feet,” she added.
The Redcar Sea Cadets meet at the Zetland Park Methodist Church and store equipment in a building behind the church.
PO (SCC) Bob Esplin, who is the Unit’s Commanding Officer, said they were sure the thieves knew exactly what they were doing when they broke in.
“They lifted two eight foot security gates off their hinges and broke through a metal security door,” said Bob. “They knew what they were after. We are waiting to see what the insurance will pay out but we know it won’t be the true cost of what we need to replace.”
Included in the theft was a 40hp engine used to power the group’s safety boat. Until the engine is replaced they are having to borrow safety boats from neighbouring sea cadet units in order to be able to carry out their activities.
Bob added: “We’re really grateful to UK Wood Recycling for their donation. It means a lot that companies like that are willing to help us out because we don’t receive any statutory funding. We are an independent charity and we have to fund everything by raising the money ourselves.”
